The Association of British and Chinese University Students was formed in 1994 at Cambridge University by a group of mainly British-born Chinese who felt that there was a need to promote an awareness of the Chinese community in Britain. Since then, ABACUS in Cambridge has grown into a society that holds regular social meets and charitable events. ABACUS ran Chinese language and calligraphy classes from the outset because education was seen as an integral part of promoting awareness. Now, this function is now run by the Chinese Cultural Society, with which ABACUS maintains close ties. The Society has also been successful in spreading its ideas into other universities: five other Associations now exist at Cambridge, Bristol, Imperial College, King's College London, UCL, LSE, Barts-QM, SOAS and now at Brunel!
